Originated in various parts of France, especially in Lille, when mothers began to gather to pray with and for one another, and for their children, to discuss their problems, and to advise one another regarding the Christian rearing of their children. The movement gradually solidified, and on May 1, 1850, the first conference of Christian Mothers was held in Lille, under the leadership of Louise Josson de Bilhem, a court official. The society was introduced into the United Stated by the Capuchin Friars and on January 16, 1881. The Confraternity of Christian Mothers of St. Augustine Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was raised to the rank of an archconfraternity with the right of affiliating other confraternities wherever the ordinary approved. Since 1881 some 3,500 confraternities have been affiliated with the Pittsburgh archconfraternity.
Under the special patronage of the "Mother of Sorrows" our members have joyously undertaken the important task of training and sanctifying the young souls entrusted to their care. Our goal under this Confraternity is not simply to unite mothers in prayer, but also to instruct, educate and inspire mothers in performing their duties and in practicing virtue. For decades our members are our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and aunts who serve and have served our children and our parish. From years of serving the parish through the making of pizza, nut rolls, Easter bread, pierogies, and thousands and thousands of cookies, the love of these women to our parish goes unmatched. Their strong Catholic values, taught by spiritual role models, planted the seeds of faith, knowledge, and service within them - reason why our Christian Mothers are also Readers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Greets, Catechists and much more. Through prayer and works we have become the mainstay of spiritual life within our own families and a blessing to our parish and its children.
Christian Mothers is open to all practicing Catholic women over the age of 18. We come together for Mass in communion and prayer before every monthly meeting. Our meetings are held during the evening hours of the second Monday of the month at the Holy Redeemer Parish Catholic Center. Check the Parish Calendar for when our meetings take place each month. New members are installed at our May mass.
